Yue-type Cup with Foreigner Head Handle
Eastern Jin Dynasty 317 - 420 AD, China
Length: 9.5cm
A small stoneware bowl with flattened broad center and steeply rounded walls ending in a slightly rounded mouth-rim. Set atop the rim is a small handle in the form of a foreigner’s head. The underfoot is shallowly concave and has three gritty spur
marks imbedded in the glaze. The entire piece is covered in a deep green colored translucent glaze.
The concave foot of this piece is reminiscent of those on earlier frog-shaped ewers, suggesting an earlier 6th century dating.
Condition: Handle re-stuck with old repair.
Provenance:
Private Japanese Collection
