

Northern Celadon Carved Plate
Northern Song Dynasty, 960-1127 AD, China
Diameter: 18.5cm
A stoneware plate with notched rim and densely carved peony decoration on the inside cavetto and center, which is contained within a deeply carved circle. The exterior has a lightly incised band under the rim, and the foot is unglazed beneath to reveal a stoneware body fired to a buff color. The entire piece is covered with a finely crackled green glaze that pools in the carving accentuating the design.
