Large Charger with Prancing Horse

Le-So Dynasty 15th-16th c. Vietnam

Diameter: 34.5 cm

A large porcelaineous stoneware charger with barbed rim and a central depiction of a prancing horse, head turned back, amongst three large and two small cloud motifs, all finely drawn in cobalt blue.  A band of waves surrounds the center, and the cavetto is decorated with scrolling floral depictions.  The flattened, barbed rim has closely drawn crossed-sword motifs.  The back has ruyi petals around the sides, and an iron oxide brown wash under the unglazed foot rim.
