Large Jomon Doki

3500 - 2500 B.C, Japan

Height: 55 cm

A tall earthenware cooking vessel with tapered cylindrical base ending in a flared, swirling mouth rim with four loop handles, each with multiple circular openings.  The exterior is covered overall with deeply incised abstract decoration filled in with impressed rope patterns.  The entire piece is reconstructed from several sections, with the very bottom and small areas of the top repaired.  Reputedly excavated in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan.
