A Haniwa Head of a Warrior
Kofun Period 3rd - 6th c. AD, Japan
Height: 26.7cm
A fragmentary sculpture of an earthenware Haniwa warrior figure. The head is surmounted by a topknot, which tips back and the eyes and mouth are represented by elongated incisions in the thick earthenware clay body. The ears are formed around circular openings, below which there are applied semicircular earrings. The neck is studded with applied dots, representing a beaded necklace. There are combing marks around the head and an intentionally incised mark at the top of the forehead.
